Curiosity Killed the Cat: Do you watch YouTube perfume reviews?

via

Hi, everyone!

I'm doing a quick little poll today. Well, three, actually.

I do a lot of searches online for perfume reviews - I'm betting you do, too. It occurred to me that I always skip over YouTube reviews. I just don't "do" YouTube. Sometimes I scurry over for a particularly promising kitty cat video, and there are three perfume reviewers I am subscribed to because they're friends of mine, but otherwise I just don't do it.

Do you? I'm wondering if that's an age thing? Or a lazy thing? Or a computer speed thing? Or a I-hate-focusing-on-one-thing-so-I-prefer-written-reviews thing? My computer is fast, but I think the others have to do with my own personal preferences!

If you have a moment and are curious, like me, will you fill in these little polls for me? And I'd love to discuss more in the Comments, if you've thoughts to share!

xoxo,
jen

  1. the fragrance blogs and FB groups in which I participate are populated with smart funny people who are also fun to read. I like reading the conversations of opinions on websites. one voice (likely someone I don't know online or IRL) doesn't really do it for me. most of my fragrance friends (those I know online and/or IRL) post their opinions exclusively online so that's where I will likely continue to get my info!

    1. Great answer! I agree. I do enjoy the "one voice" representations on various blogs, but then again - I read multiple blog reviews on the same scent. I just never incorporate the YouTubers, for some reason.

  2. I think it depends on the quality of the youtube reviewer of course. Like you, I am not naturally drawn to youtube reviews, but having said that, I love youtube for things like guitar lessons. I enjoy the Katie Puckrik reviews, because she's funny, slick and clearly someone with some experience in this medium, but some reviewers are downright boring, for example I saw one guy do a review of a Dior perfume where it took him about 7 minutes just to unveil the bottle from its packinging, punctuated by plenty of ums and ahs. I think a lot of bloggers edit their work, but I get the feeling there are plenty of youtubers who don't, so the format suffers?

    1. I agree with Michael and Anonymous who's on FB groups. I've tried watching a couple of youtube reviews, and was compelled to stop them after a brief period as they were so desperately boring and slow.

    2. I'm with Michael and Tommasina on this.

I rarely watch fragrance reviews on YT. I don't seek them out. The ones have I watched have been because they were posted on FB perfume boards but even then, I usually stop the video before the one minute mark because they are BORING! I find it kind of funny because the comments posted for the video(s) on the FB group(s) are usually so upbeat and complimentary. So, I sit there thinking, did they watch the same video I did?

    3. I agree. I don't have the patience to look around and weed through the boring ones. It takes talent to make perfume interesting. Mostly, we want to know: how did it smell and did you like it. Some reviews (even written ones) never get there. Next!

Dawn, I have seen some funny reviewers who, once you learn their "schtick" are then tedious to watch. Even Katie, with her goofy self, can sometimes seem to be repeating herself.

  3. I follow one or two reviewer's but not consistent. Most interaction is on FB where questions are usually answered quickly from other perfume lovers.

  4. Honestly, the only youtube reviews I watch are Katie's. I saw some others by accident mostly, but Katie's are the only ones I tend to watch.

    1. Thanks for answering, Ines. I have a few reviewers I've stumbled upon but like I said above, even Katie seems to repeat herself sometimes.

  5. Honestly, most utube reviews are too long --anything over 4 minutes is just annoying....they can tell me what I want to know in about 2 minutes...after that they are just talking.

    1. Yes! And I have NEVER understood filming the unboxing process. I know what it looks like to unwrap something. If the packaging is particularly lovely (like when you get something from an indie perfumer) then take a still shot and show it at the beginning of the video. I don't care to watch that or to watch you stumble for words. I'm a curmudgeon. ;)

    2. Thanks Daisy,
for confirming what I also think: I like video reviews in general, but when I see on the right bottom corner something like 7, 8 or 11 minutes I won't even click on Play. 4 minutes should be the never-to-be-crossed line for a perfume review.
Listening to the description of a bottle that is right in front of me, or the story of when the reviewer smelt the perfume for the first time MIGHT be interesting, but most of the times it's not.
I like Katie Pukrik, not only for her witty style, but also because she's short and to the point, and it's clear that she's following a scrpit and not doing a stream of consciousness like most of video reviewers do.

    3. Thanks for coming aboard, Andrea! Pukrik is a pro, with plenty of on-screen experience. I'm quite certain she follows a script. It's one of the reasons her videos are easy to watch and pleasure.

  7. I am a reviewer on youtube and love the format. I like watching youtube reviews as well cause it helps to see expression with reviews. It also helps build a connection that you cannot get with written word. I like facebook cause it allows us fumeheads to be able to chat 24 hours a day. Youtube does not have that type of connection. YouTube is a little more personal to me though as with facebook and written review sites it's only a picture of the person and sometimes it's not even that. A part of my fragrance journey that I really love is the personal connection I have with others. All venues play a different but wonderful role in this fragrance hobby.

    2. I knew it was you by your comment, love! :D And yours is one of the few channels I watch. I agree: all of the different ways to access reviews all build on the fragrance community, which I love. xoxo

  8. I do not like the format in general. Besides, most reviews I happen to come across were much less professionally made or appealing than those blog posts that I read.

  10. Wow, I think you've learned a bit about your readership: 75% over 40 when I hit "vote"! How cool is that? (Speaking as a 45-years=today lady, I think it's pretty neat.)
